Marathon Server Slam: Download Start Time, Content, and Exclusive Rewards

Share

Bungie’s Marathon is almost here, and you don’t have to wait until launch day to play it. The Server Slam gives everyone a free shot at the game starting February 26, 2026, just days before the full release on March 5. No pre-order required. No sign-up. You just download it and go.

But there’s a catch. There’s no preloading, which means you can’t queue up the download early and jump in right when the servers go live. You’ll be downloading and installing at the same time as everyone else. And with the event only running through March 2, every hour counts if you want to hit the progression milestones that unlock rewards you keep forever.

This post covers everything you need to get ready. You’ll find the exact start times for your region, step-by-step download instructions for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, a full breakdown of what’s playable during the event, and every reward tier worth grinding for.

Key Dates and Global Availability

The Marathon Server Slam kicks off on February 26, 2026, at 10 AM PT and runs until March 2, 2026, at 10 AM PT. That gives you almost five full days to jump into Bungie’s new extraction shooter and see what all the buzz is about.

If you’re counting down to the full release, mark March 5, 2026 on your calendar. That’s when Marathon officially launches, just three days after the Server Slam wraps up.

Here’s the breakdown for when you can start playing based on your location. For those on the US West Coast, it’s 10 AM PST on February 26 through 10 AM PST on March 2. East Coast players can jump in at 1 PM EST on February 26 and play until 1 PM EST on March 2. If you’re in the UK, the Server Slam opens at 6 PM GMT on February 26 and closes at 6 PM GMT on March 2. Central European players get access at 7 PM CET on February 26, running through 7 PM CET on March 2.

Down Under? Australian players start at 5 AM AEDT on February 27 and have until 5 AM AEDT on March 3. New Zealand gets the earliest jump at 7 AM NZDT on February 27, wrapping up at 7 AM NZDT on March 3.

How to Download on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S

Good news: the Server Slam is completely free. No sign-ups required. No pre-orders necessary. You don’t even need to purchase anything to participate in this preview weekend.

Downloads become available across all platforms right when the event starts on February 26 at 10 AM PT. You’ll need to wait until then because there’s no early access to the download files.

For PC players, head over to Steam and find Marathon’s store page. The Server Slam appears as an add-on to the main game listing. Click download and you’re good to go.

Xbox players have a couple of options. Navigate to the Subscriptions tab in the Xbox Store and look for the Free Play Days collection. The Marathon Server Slam should be featured there. You can also search directly for “Marathon Server Slam” in the Xbox app to pull it up quickly. Xbox has confirmed the game will be available through their Free Play Days program during this period.

PlayStation 5 users will find the listing in the PlayStation Store once the event goes live. Sony typically makes these preview weekends easy to locate on the storefront homepage.

Important Note: No Preloading Available

Don’t set your alarm for the night before hoping to preload. Bungie has confirmed there won’t be any preloading option for the Marathon Server Slam. Everyone starts downloading at the same time: February 26 at 10 AM PT.

This means you’ll want to factor in your download speed when planning your first session. Clear some storage space ahead of time and make sure your internet connection is ready to go when the clock strikes 10 AM Pacific.

Playable Content and Features During the Server Slam

The Marathon Server Slam gives you hands-on access to a solid chunk of what Bungie’s extraction shooter has to offer. You won’t be testing a stripped-down demo. This is real gameplay with meaningful depth.

Two maps are available for exploration during the event. Perimeter takes you to an edge-site expansion where the colony pushes into unknown territory, while Dire Marsh drops you into the agricultural research hub where things have clearly gone sideways. Each map offers distinct tactical challenges and environmental storytelling that hints at the larger Marathon universe.

Faction progression plays a big role in the Server Slam experience. Five factions open their doors to you: CyberAcme, NuCaloric, Traxus, MIDA, and Arachne. You can take on early contracts for each faction, progressing through their initial levels and unlocking parts of their skill trees. This gives you a real taste of how faction loyalty and progression will shape your playstyle in the full game.

Character customization comes through Runner shells, and you’ll have five of the six launch options to experiment with. The Assassin, Destroyer, Recon, Triage, and Vandal shells are all playable, each bringing unique abilities and tactical approaches. You can also experience Rook, the scavenger-focused shell that introduces you to the basics. The Thief shell is sitting this one out, but that still leaves plenty of variety to find your preferred playstyle.

Social features are fully baked in. Squad up with friends or jump into solo queue if you prefer flying alone. Proximity chat adds a layer of tension and strategy, letting you hear nearby players whether they’re on your team or hunting you down. That audio element changes everything about how you approach encounters.

The technical backbone is impressive too. Cross-play works seamlessly across Steam, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, so your platform choice doesn’t limit who you can team up with. Even better, cross-save means your progress follows you everywhere. Start a session on console, continue on PC. Your Runner levels, unlocks, and rewards sync across all platforms without hassle.

Exclusive Rewards for Participation and Progression

Every moment you spend in the Server Slam counts toward permanent rewards. Nothing gets wiped when the event ends. All progress and unlocks carry directly into the full game launch on March 5, 2026. That makes this weekend more than just a test. It’s your head start.

Just finishing the introductory mission earns you something special. You’ll unlock a unique emblem and player background that marks you as part of the first wave of Runners. It’s a badge of honor that proves you were there from the beginning, and it won’t be available after launch.

Hit Runner Level 10 and you’ll receive the Standard Arrival Cache. This package isn’t just cosmetic fluff. You get 6 standard implants to modify your Runner’s capabilities, 4 standard Runner shell cores that enhance your chosen playstyle, and 6 standard weapon chip mods to tune your arsenal. The cache also includes two weapons: the Overrun and Hardline.

That’s real gear with real gameplay impact.

Push to Runner Level 30 and the rewards get serious. The Deluxe Arrival Cache substantially ups the quality tier. You’ll receive 3 deluxe and 3 enhanced implants for deeper character customization. The shell core package is generous: 1 deluxe and 1 enhanced core for each of the six Runner shells, giving you 12 total cores to experiment with. Weapon modifications expand with 2 deluxe and 2 enhanced weapon chip mods. The arsenal additions include the Deluxe Magnum and Enhanced Volley Rifle, both premium versions of core weapons. You’ll also snag a Deluxe Base Backpack that increases your carrying capacity right from launch day.

Level 30 is achievable during the Server Slam timeframe if you commit to the grind. The rewards make it worth the effort.
